Maxwell’s debut release ‘I’ll Wait’ is a gutsy subversion of dance music; intentional, individual and avant-electronic.

Opening with warm piano chords that are contrasted with a distorted side-chained lead, the track suddenly drops into an exhibition of arpeggiated bass and bright drums which create equal parts grit and groove. With an overall compressed and crushed feeling, ‘I’ll Wait’ seems to continuously morph and contort.

With an arrangement that is hard to pin down and a sledging of sound design that sounds familiar but somehow doesn’t seem to exist yet, listeners are treated to a balance of soundscape reminiscence and experimentation. A simple and glitchy vocal sample humanises this otherwise futuristic and AI sounding style of dance track.

Maxwell’s Lab Six Records debut ‘I’ll Wait’ leaves us waiting no more and has lifted the veil on the evolution of dance music and carved a rightful slice for this young producer’s verve.
